Before any excavation, it is essential to know what lies below the ground. Geomap locates and maps buried pipes, cables and other utilities using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and electromagnetic Radio Detection (RD), reducing the risk of utility strikes, delays and accidents on site.
How we work
- Site investigation and review of any existing utility records
- Electromagnetic detection (RD) to trace metallic pipes and cables
- GPR scanning to detect metallic and non-metallic utilities
- Marking utilities on the ground and recording their positions with GNSS
- Producing the utility map, CAD drawings and a technical report
Deliverables
- Utility map overlaid on a satellite image or survey base map
- CAD drawings showing utility type, position and depth where it can be determined
- Technical report with photos and findings
Where we work
Oil and gas fields, pump stations and pipeline routes; power plants and refineries; roads and highway corridors; airports; and commercial and residential developments across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Selected projects
- Above-ground and underground survey along a 294 km gas pipeline route, Akkas to Anbar
- 28 km raw water pipeline underground survey, Basra
- Utility detection at 60 defect sites across 7 crude oil pump stations
- Ongoing utility detection service contract for oil field operations, Erbil
Why detect utilities before you dig?
Striking a buried pipe or cable can injure workers, cut services to whole neighbourhoods or facilities, and cause expensive repairs and delays. In many sites in Iraq, records of existing utilities are incomplete or out of date, so the only reliable way to know what is underground is to survey it.
What affects the results
GPR and electromagnetic detection are highly effective, but results depend on ground conditions. Wet or clay-rich soils, deep utilities and congested areas can limit detection. We assess the site conditions before starting, combine several methods to get the best result, and state the confidence level of our findings clearly in the report, so you know exactly what was found and where extra caution is needed.
